What is a meanwhile block?
Cities are always evolving — we’re nostalgic for what was and wonder about what will come, and when. The concept of meanwhile use was born from this.
It’s the idea of using empty space to create opportunities for people, beyond a pop-up shop time period of a few weeks to make full use of a space for the maximum period it is empty.
It’s not a new concept, to be sure, but we wanted to reimagine what could be in the in between, for our city.
Not just an event space or a mural, but something that builds a quality of place that evolves purposefully to foster curiosity, creativity and connection for people.
Enter stage left — The Meanwhile Block™! The MWB™ is our brand of meanwhile use that mixes placemaking with creative reuse and dials the volume way, way up. In store: art installations, curious experiences, special events, community markets and other fun projects we’ll dream up together!
Our first MWB location is a full city block located downtown, in what will be part of the future Park Union neighborhood — the first of what we hope are many future “blocks”.
